Costs of parthenogenesis on growth and longevity in ex situ zebra sharks Stegostoma tigrinum

چکیده
The zebra shark Stegostoma tigrinum , a popular aquarium fish, is an endangered species that known to readily reproduce both sexually and through facultative parthenogenesis while in human care. Artificial insemination trials took place between 2011 2013 resulted the hatching of 2 produced (herein heterozygotes) 10 parthenogenetic sharks allowed for retrospective comparison growth, feeding longevity offspring from distinct reproductive modes. Parthenogenetic were generally smaller at hatch than their heterozygous counterparts and, after first several months post-hatch, failed increase mass length same rate as heterozygotes. exhibited non-normal swimming behaviors such spiraling, spy hopping head standing, which may have been correlated with gradual decline ability some properly suction feed. Median lifespan parthenotes was 1.05 yr (range: 0.27-6.64 yr); one heterozygotes lived 2.37 age, other alive time this writing August 2022 had reached maturity. By contrast, longest surviving perished just prior reaching sexual maturity (~5.5 ~6.5 yr). Parthenogenesis has documented among ex situ S. maintained aquariums across globe, study demonstrates substantial negative costs fitness compared siblings. reduced implications managing populations care well conservation efforts.

Putative Male – Male Agonistic Behaviour in Free-Living Zebra Sharks, Stegostoma fasciatum
We analysed digital still photographs of two interacting free-living male zebra sharks. The recorded behaviours are similar in appearance to some male – female courtship and mating patterns in elasmobranchs and several of the positions are similar to or resemble reproductive behaviours known from other species. We discuss two possible hypotheses that may explain the interaction, sexual behaviou...
متن کاملEx-situ studies on calcinations of structural, optical and morphological properties of post-growth nanoparticles CeO2 by HRTEM and SAED
Nanocrystalline particles of Cerium Oxide (CeO2) have been prepared by the chemical precipitation method using Cerium nitrate and Urea with a molar ratio of 1:2. The results revealed that the formation of CeO2 fine particles is influenced by molar ratio of metal nitrates to fuel. Well faceted CeO2 nanoparticles, were synthesized by thermal-assisted dissociation ...

متن کاملFabrication of Ti3SiC2-SiC max phase composites via in-situ and ex-situ synthesis
Recently, a series of three-component compounds with the combination of Mn+1AXn known as Max phases have been considered as a new material. One of the most important features of Max phases, is the self-healing property of them. The main reason for considering Max Phases is a unique collection of unusual properties including their metallic, ceramic, physical, and mechanical properties. One of th...
متن کاملon translation of politeness strategies in dialogues involving female characters in translations and retranslations of novels translated before and after the islamic revolution of iran and their effects on the image of women: a polysystem theory approach
abstract reception environment has considerable effects on accepting a translation. as the expectations of a target culture and its values and needs change throughout history, its criteria for accepting a translation or rejecting it will change accordingly (gentzler, 2001). the expectations of iran, as the reception environment in the present study, have changed after the islamic revolution. i...
